Linux on iPhone - freedom at last

Linux on iPhone: Even it looks pretty primitive with missing drivers and just a terminal - we guess now that the community has seen it, a lot more people might jump on board now. Linux on iPhone has a lot more potential than the iPhone OS anyway. The story start when some Linux guys with reverse engineering modify Apple's hardware drivers and managed to port a version of Linux to both the iPhone and iPod touch.

I know that only the nerdiest users of iPhone owners will be deeply excited about this news, but it definitely points to interesting times ahead for the future of this handset.

For now there are no Linux drivers yet for: Write support for the NAND, Wireless networking, Touchscreen, Sound, Accelerometer, Baseband support, etc.

In other words, you're not going to be able to do anything much with your Linux iPhone yet, but this is just the first step.

So the question is… is Apple going to strengthen its efforts in fighting the jailbreak community? Hacking iPhone to support it in other countries is one thing, adding some harmless applications is another, but changing almost every piece of software and practically rebuilding the whole thing? I don’t think they want that to happen.

It is just a question of time when the hackers will move on to the next project - It will be very interesting to see Android in the iPhone or iPod!
