I use a lot Open Office Writer and every time I'm frustrated of application launch speed. Here is quick and excellent tutorial of how to speed up all OpenOffice apps:

  1. Start Open Office Writer
  2. From Tools menu choose Options
  3. From the left menu choose Memory and check the box Enable systray Quickstarter (this will work for all OpenOffice suite)

  4. Next choose Java and turn off Use a Java Runtime environment

Enjoy.
