I use a lot Open Office Writer and every time I'm frustrated of application launch speed. Here is quick and excellent tutorial of how to speed up all OpenOffice apps:
- Start Open Office Writer
- From Tools menu choose Options
- From the left menu choose Memory and check the box Enable systray Quickstarter (this will work for all OpenOffice suite)
- Next choose Java and turn off Use a Java Runtime environment

Enjoy.
